What about cost?
How much should you expect to pay for a renewable energy system? Well, as with anything else you buy, it depends. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish, what bells and whistles you want, and your specific situation.
For solar PV, you can expect to pay anywhere from under $3 per watt to more than $8 per watt, depending on whether you are installing a simple grid-tie only system on a roof with easy access and no installation obstacles, or an off-grid system on poles with sophisticated monitoring systems and a large battery bank for multi-day autonomy.
For solar hot water, the cost will depend on how large a system you need, and the length of the pipe run between the collectors and the storage tank. Prices range between $10,000 and $12,000 for a domestic hot water system, to over $20,000 for a large space-heating system with multiple collectors. Again, the cost depends on your specific situation and requirements.
